Christmas Gift Idea #6 : The good way to get started with flying RC models

The Santa Claus letter asks (very politely) a radiocontrolled aircraft… And the author of the letter have never fly before… What to choose ? Of course, the future beginner have in mind a Mustang, a Spitfire or Papy Boyington’s Corsair ! But that’s a fact, to be sure to not be desapointed very quickly by the wonderful warbird broken at first attempt, Santa Claus would be well advised to bring a true « trainer » model !

Yes, flying a RC aircraft is almost the same think than flying a true scale airplane… But here, you are not inside, you only have your eyes to estimate speed, altitude and attitude, not any gauge ! So, when you learn to drive a true car, you don’t drive a Ferrari nor a Formula One… It is the same to learn to fly a RC airplane, you have to do this with a slow, stable, and forgiving aircraft. It can be an airplane, a glider or a motor-glider (The motor is only used to get altitude, and then, the model soar with motor off).

Beez2b helps you with some perfect models for learning to fly, and made by FMS. All are made of durable but lightweight EPO foam, easy to repair when necessary. More, they are available as « RTF » (Ready To Fly) kits, which means they are factory assembled (you only have to do the final assembly, this needs only a few minutes), with motor, servos, radio system. All the radio systems uses the 2.4 GHz technology, so the pilot don’t need to manage canal or frequency, the radio system select a free frequency, like your mobile device do. In the box, you find also the battery and a charger.

There are two versions of each model : Mode 1 or Mode 2. The difference is the location of controls on the transmitter. With mode 1, throttle is on right stick and elevator on left stick. With mode 2, Throttle is on left stick and elevator on right stick. Choose what you prefer.

EASY TRAINER 800

Easy Trainer 800 is a motor-glider, wise and forgiving, with a small size : its wingspan is only 800 mm. It is controlled by two servos for rudder and elevator, and with the throttle lever. It features a modern brushless motor powered by a 2S 7.4V 350 mAh LiPo battery.

RED DRAGON

Red Dragon can be a plane with the landing gear, or a motor-glider without the landing gear… It is larger than the Easy Trainer with a 900 mm wingspan, and it feature ailerons, for a more direct control of banking. So, it is equiped with 4 servos. It also features a brushless motor, powered by a 2S 7.4V 1300 mAh LiPo battery, ensuring a large flight time.

SUPER EZ

Last, the Super EZ is an airplane, larger than the two others, with a 1220 mm wingspan. It offers a good look and is lightweight, so it can fly slowly. It features ailerons, elevator and rudder. Its powerful brushless motor is powered by a 3S 11.1V 1300 mAh LiPo battery, for up to 15 mn flight time. When you will get well trained with basic flying, the Super EZ will be perfect to learn basic aerobatic maneuvers !

And the more important advice : You’ll never have the idea to jump in a real aircraft and to try to take off without learning with an instructor before… It is the same for RC models, learning with a monitor gives you the best chances to improve quickly your skills, and without breaking your model.
