Modèle Magazine #845

February 2022

Hervé Mourichoux test in this issue of the french magazine our FMS 1700mm wingspan Piper PA-18. He also compare this best seller to the Multiplex FunCub XL ND, and demonstrate that the two airplanes with quite similar size and look are in fact very differents and made for different usage.

He especially like the quality of the kit and of the packaging, but the flight behavior and the STOL performances is really what make him love this aircraft.

6 pages are dedicated to the test, and one more page is for the "PA-18 Vs FunCub XL ND" comparison.

Some excerpts from the text :

  • The quality of the kit is perceived as soon as the box is opened.

  • The connection of the (wing) servos and these LEDs is entrusted to a single socket which is mounted in the root of each wing.

  • It only took an hour to assemble the model.

  • When full throttle is applied, the model rises quickly on its main landing gear to take off in less than 10 meters.

  • The full flaps notch is quite impressive: the plane almost seems to stop in the sky and continues to fly.

  • The touchs and go are facilitated by the very good damping effect of the landing gear which absorbs the impâct and limits the risk of bouncing.

  • If I had to say just one thing, I'd say he's a "real Piper".

These two very similar airplanes, which seem to target the same pilots, are ultimately quite different. The Piper, more accessible, lighter and easier to fly, will be an excellent model for few experienced pilots looking for quiet flight. The more expensive Funcub, with its more accomplished design and its powerful engine, will allow a wider range of maneuvers with a more fun flight. All you have to do is choose the one that suits you!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This test presented in Model Magazine was obviously made from one of the first kits delivered to the stores at the end of 2019. The indicative price announced corresponds to this time and is no longer relevant. Indeed, since then, the kits are delivered with the float set as standard, as well as with the "Reflex" flight stabilizer, and even today with the "Reflex V2" version. Manufacturer and transport price increases have also come into play since then. The recommended retail price is therefore €329.99 including tax when this review is published and not €275.00…
